The key to a successful search is being prepared. Before you begin, consider your priorities (price, location, transportation, roommate). After you have worked out some of the basics, there are a number of places to search. NOTE: Duplicate listings (the same property listed in more than one category) are not allowed and will not be placed online. There's been an increase in occurrences of scams lately, namely pertaining to money orders from scammers posing as international students. Please make sure you review our warning about these possibilities located at the top of this page.
Personal property items typically covered include clothing, furniture, textbooks, computers, electronic devices, bicycles, musical instruments, and sports equipment. If you are studying abroad, several companies offer worldwide personal property coverage. Insurance for items in storage is also available for purchase. Renter’s insurance coverage usually includes losses from theft, fire, flood, vandalism, natural disasters, and accidental damage. Automobiles and accessories (ex. car stereos and GPS devices), motorcycles, boats, firearms, artwork, currency, and contact lenses are examples of items usually not covered by these policies. A full description of property items that are covered or uncovered, limited coverage, and special provisions will be detailed in the insurance company’s policy booklet. As a student, you may be covered under your parent’s homeowner’s policy. We recommend that you check with your insurance agent to see if you are covered, or if an additional “rider” is needed to add renter’s coverage or to insure specific expensive personal property such as jewelry. Be sure to ask about the deductible, as insurance companies specializing in renter’s insurance for students may offer lower deductibles. Replacement cost coverage will reimburse you for the actual dollar amount needed to replace the covered items in the event of loss or damage. Typically a one-time premium provides the policy holder coverage for a twelve month period. While we do not endorse a particular company, the names of several companies that offer personal property insurance products are listed here for your convenience: C.T. Lowndes & Company National Student Services, Inc. Student Insurance Group, LLC Links to local companies.
